Drawing on experiences from my 490 practicum, I found that being open and acceptive of the diverse needs of the students in my class to be the best experience with inclusive education. I had one student who had a terrifying fear of presenting to the front of the class and so there was one day where they handed their speech into me a day early. I went to this student and told them that they had crafted a beautifully written speech, the assignment is deserving of 100% but I needed that student to share out that assignment. The student ended up presenting to the class and showed some excellent communication and speaking competencies that had not been explored yet. Later that student came back and told me that they really appreciated the confidence instilled in them to do the presentation. This example of inclusive education is a moment driven by values as an educator, such as respect, responsibility and care. Because of these values being present in my practice, I was able to identify that every student has strengths and stretches, but the kindness and the compassion with our students is what drives the inclusive aspect of teaching.
